Today’s post is not a “Throwback Thursday” repeat, but in some ways, it does come with its own built-in ‘nod’ to last year’s Advent. Because that’s when it started. That’s when my friend Stephanie and I, as we wondered what was next for us in our vocations and our spiritual lives, took on Advent as microblogging vloggers. That’s a mouthful. But if your recall, we wrote daily and “vlogged” weekly, giving our subscribers pointers on how to observe the season with intention and spirit, and we also lit the wreath before you each week, reflecting on the words that go with those candles: Peace, Hope, Joy, and Love.
This year, we’re back at it. The platform is different, the videos will be different (we live in different states now!) but the message will be the same – we continue to seek these truths of God in the midst of our busy lives; we trust that Peace, Hope, Joy and Love are still yet to be found.
So today, we alert you to prepare for the future but with a nod to the past. (On many levels.) We prepare during the season of Advent for the arrival of Christ at Christmas. We also prepare for the day when he comes again, when reality will be swept up in nothing more than peace and hope, joy and love. And, we look back. When it comes to this project, the two of us marvel at what has been “born” of a hair-brained idea last fall. But we also look back on these precarious stories; biblical narratives of angels and peasants, virgins, shepherds, ruthless kings, and unsuspecting innkeepers. Their ordinary-ness gives us hope that the prophecies are true: the Divine can indeed use just about anyone for the glory of God’s kingdom.
