Wednesday Musings: Altars
I felt moved to create this altar in my home office as a focal point during morning prayer. One by one, the pieces came together. The divine presences of Mary, Jesus and the Buddha. The sand for the candle bowl; the amethyst sparkling kitty-corner from the electrical outlet in the wall.
Altars were once associated with religious sacrifice, but I prefer the simple Latin of an altar as a “high place.” Obviously, here that’s metaphorical: this floor altar is where I go higher. Letting prayers rise up as candle smoke, I rise above the daily stream of ordinary awareness to let God take me higher and higher, and also deeper and deeper.
Where are your altars in this world?
