Welcome to tiny faith! A distinctly Christian e-zine that recognizes the wide span of the kingdom of God.

Hush

Hush

Hush now, dear one.  It’s time to rest.

You were there for the final, ragged moments.  You witnessed the hard labor of death.  Inside, hope of a different future slowly leaked away.  Inside, there dawned a sense of what was coming.  It is right in front of your eyes.  The bruised body that held and comforted you.  The familiar voice now needs breath it doesn’t have.  It is finished.  The last three years led to this.  How did you not see where this was headed?  And yet, given what happened, how could it have been otherwise?

Hush now, dear one.  It’s time to rest.

A body holds a spirit as an oyster holds a pearl.  When the spirit is gone, the shell has no use.  You stood with your loved ones for a while, just watching.  And then the business of death must be taken care of.  The body needs to be prepared; the final resting place wrenched open.  You do what you have to do.  You console and sympathize.  You make plans and cover details.  But a part of you is still back there.  A part of you has not left that place of death.

Hush now, dear one.  It’s time to rest.

Tomorrow you can get up early.  Tomorrow you can go to the burial place to fuss and futz.  Perhaps you can sit in the garden for a while, and look at the flowers.  But that’s tomorrow.  Today you have one job to do.  It’s time to rest.

Hush now.  Hush.
